No Such Place

This place can be seen, experienced and recognized, with a clear identity, with characteristics and inhabitants. A place that is possible to describe and even visit if you wish, but on the other hand it denies that this place is actually here or there. It is no such thing or does not exist as such.

Is there a dominant image of the city, one that exists in our minds permanently? Or do we have to immerse ourselves in it again and again to see or discover which part we allow to exist? What we see is irrefutable but not necessarily true or unambiguous. As a viewer we can’t escape the echo of our own gaze. But maybe in discovery the place is already there, waiting to be explored, revealed, found out, or just seen.

For each of us the city becomes, or is, a different place at different times affected by social factors such as gender, class and ethnicity. Taking this into account the city creates as many variations on a single city as there are residents. Feelings of disorientation occur when we try to navigate through all these different fragments of possible lives in possible places in a gradual strangling of the possible city. The city becomes a setting or backdrop, where stories unfold, and where the boundaries between reality and imagination blur. The images of No Such Place are all taken in Berlin.

No Such Place is self published in a limited edition.
